Family bathrooms are an essential part of any home, but they are easy to overlook when it comes to function and attractiveness. This guide lists four ways you can make your family bathroom work for everyone.

1. Assess the Space

Family bathrooms can vary in scope and size. For example, in many homes, they're smaller and more basic than the master bedroom suite. However, if you work with the space you have rather than trying to make it into something it’s not, then you can create a great bathroom.

For example, if the room is small, then consider a space-saving pedestal sink and wall shelves rather than a clunky vanity. You could also use nearby storage outside the bathroom for extra towels and supplies.

Have plenty of space? A double vanity can help keep kids from arguing over the bathroom and make it easier for guests. The same goes for separate shower and bathtub units.

2. Plan for Storage

If kids, daytime guests, or even overnight guests will use the bathroom, then it will have to serve a lot of different needs. This means lots of belongings, toiletries, and supplies need to be kept in the room.

The best place to start is with a large and useful vanity. Look for one with several drawers as well as a cabinet. Drawers help keep things more organized than a cabinet, especially if you need to separate the belongings of multiple kids.

You can also add storage options with a stand-alone cabinet — preferably built-in — as well as added shelves around the bathtub, shower, and in the corners of the room. Make use of hanging hooks, freestanding wall shelves, and racks.

3. Keep the Bathroom Simple

The more complicated you try to make a family bathroom, the harder it will be to keep it in good repair, clean, and functioning well.

Don't clutter this space with unnecessary knick-knacks or artwork. Choose individual decorations carefully and make them low-maintenance. In a busy bathroom, a beautiful pendant lamp and a couple of pieces of wall art can go a long way toward making things look great and be easy to work with.

Need easy ways to keep the bathroom cleaner and fresher? Opt for floating vanities or sinks that make cleaning underneath a breeze. Avoid unnecessary thresholds and small tiles that can catch dirt and debris. In addition, you could try frameless shower doors and wall facing toilets that leave no space for grime.

4. Make the Bathroom Multifunctional

Making your bathroom functional for multiple people at the same time, as well as meeting the needs of both guests and family members, can be difficult. How can you do this? If there's room, consider adding a separate toilet room with a door leading to the grooming area.

In addition, you could have both a shower and separate bathtub for different users. Many modern homeowners like focused grooming stations instead of extra sinks as well.

If you designate locations for users to store their things, then everyone will have an easier time using the space. Does each user have a drawer and shelves for their own belongings? Are there enough spaces in a large shower to store everyone's personal favorite products? Get the family together to brainstorm what each person wants in the bathroom in order to custom design a useful space.
